CRAVEN Arms got to the core of the matter with its own apple fair at the weekend.

The Apple Fair at the Discovery Centre offered ample opportunity to eat delicious apple foods, sample apple drinks, and identify rare types of apple.

Apple tasting was available and help with apple problems was provided by an ‘apple doctor.’

A total of 142 varieties were available to view that had been grown within a 20 mile radius.

Demonstrations showing how apples were turned into juice with the help of an apple press were presented to visitors to give them an insight into the process.

Among those present with their apples was Jamie Wrench, from Soudley near Church Stretton.

Mr Wrench brought with him the rare Margil apple which was identified at the apple fair last year.

"The experts became quite excited when they saw it," said Mr Wrench. "First of all they did not recognise it and then said it has not been recorded before in Shropshire."

It is thought the dessert apple was brought to England by George London.
