CHURCH Stretton popped the champagne corks as they wrapped up a memorable title-winning campaign following a demolishing 46-5 win against Stourport 46-5 at Shrewsbury Road.

An eight-try victory saw them leapfrog table-topping Aldridge, who had finished their programme ahead of the final Saturday of the season, to be crowned Midlands 5 West (North) champions at the first time of asking.

Fly-half Martyn Longhurst led the way with a hat-trick and other touchdowns came from Daran Chard, skipper Matt Young, Tom Ward, Rob Higgens and Danny Harley. Tom Chard kicked the other six points.

Longhurst’s first try, after retrieving his own chip ahead, and a second from Young brought a reply from Stourport, who changed around at half-time only trailing by five points.

But the home side, whose decision making had let them down at times, regrouped and once Longhurst had gone over for his second try and Daran Chard, who has now retired to take on the coaching responsibilities with Stretton’s Under-15s, powered through to score under the posts, they were rampant. Ward quickly added another try and then Stretton finished with a flourish with Harley jinking over, Longhurst barging through to complete his treble and Higgens finishing off a flowing move.

There was a big finish at Cleobury Mortimer too as they swept past the 900-point barrier for the season with win number 19 out of 20.

The Midlands 4 West (North) champions put Rugeley to the sword with a 76-19 hammering, though skipper Will Bache admitted he was disappointed to concede 19 points.

Cleobury plundered 12 tries, with Josh Phillips breaching the Rugeley line on four occasions, David Shorter weighing in with a hat-trick and the others coming from Paul Hulland (2), Tom Leach, Ben Howman and Alex Howman. Allan Shields kicked eight conversions.

Bishop’s Castle & Onny Valley signed off for the season with an encouraging 24-13 home win over Yardley & District - Ben Davies and Tom Lloyd scores sandwiching two penalty tries and Henry Winter kicking two conversions - while at the other end of the table Tenbury disappointingly departed the division as the winner's of the wooden spoon after a narrow 13-9 defeat at Bromyard. Their points came from the boot of skipper Will Gough.

In Midlands 3 West (North) Clee Hill finished on a high with a 28-5 victory over a Newcastle side who ended four places above them in the table. Charlie Evans touched down twice to finish as leading try-scorer, Adam Yarnold and Dan Romeo also bagged tries, with Craig Breakwell kicking two penalties and a conversion.
