THE Yellow Devils came out on top in Ludlow Hockey Club’s annual mixed 7-a-side tournament at Much Wenlock.

There was some quality hockey on show, both from the juniors and seniors, with the unbeaten Yellows claiming the trophy with a decisive goal from Dan Robinson in their final match.

The morning saw junior teams from Clee Hill, Church Stretton and Ludlow competing in the Under-13s event. Stretton Sharks drew their first two games, despite being reduced to six players in their second match, before producing the result of the tournament with a 7-1 win over Ludlow Town. But Clee Hill narrowly beat both Ludlow teams and drew with the Sharks to land the trophy.

The afternoon brought together six senior sides in competitive mood. After some cracking hockey, the trophy came down to the final match between the All Blacks and the Yellow Devils.

Mike Wilson’s Blacks had lost just once, to the White Knights, but needed to beat the Yellows, who hadn’t lost a game and only conceded two goals. The Yellows could afford a draw to take the trophy.

The Blacks boldly threw players forward but skipper Jake Watts kept the Yellows in great shape and, although the youngest team in the event, they held strong and a nicely finished Robinson goal was enough for both the victory and the title.
