DARREN Humphries and Liam Magill won a closely contested tournament to lift the George Mantle Cup at Ludlow Golf Club.

Their score of 43 points was enough to edge out Russell and Jonathan Price on the back nine holes.

The Prices had also finished on 43 points and there were four pairs close behind on 42.

The event has become a staple part of the Ludlow calendar, having been contested since 2003, and the winners receive the claret jug given in George’s memory by his parents Ray and Cath and brother Lewis.

George, who tragically died in 2002 at the age of 17, was both a popular member of the club and bar staff.

It is testament to his popularity that the competition is well supported by a large number of members, of all ages, all keen to get their names on his trophy.

Meanwhile, the 36-hole Fourball/Foursomes event turned out to be an eventful day with scores ranging from a hole in one on the 17th and a 15 - yes 15 - on the short, par-four fifth hole.

Matt Lucas-Garner and Darren Walters won the event with an excellent score of 134.5.

Close behind in second place with 135 were Dave Fish and Nathan Herdsfield

The best gross score of the day went to Harry Lines and Darren Humphries with a score of 141.

And Ludlow Golf Club kindly donated the use of their course to host a charity tournament which was held in aid of the PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) Association.

The day was well organised by Allison Heuvelink in memory of her late husband Roland, who was diagnosed with PSP.

Over 90 players took part in the AM-AM and the magnificent amount of £1,700 was raised for the PSP Association.

Darren Humphries won the best individual score of the day with 40 points, and he was also part of the best team as well with Tara Rodenhurst, Dave Simpson and Dave Mytton with 84 points.
