BOWLS

TWO matches went to sudden-death finishes in an action-packed finals day at Brimfield and Little Hereford Bowling Club last Saturday.

Five trophies were up for grabs and Alec Tandler and Steve Edwards were four shots up going into the last end of the Barnet Bowl Pairs, only for Jimmy Lindsay and Cyril Wait to claw it back to 9-9 before taking the game by two on the extra end.

Tandler must have thought the bowling gods were against him on the day as his team were five shots up going into the last end of the John Collett Triples – and still managed to lose by three.

Tandler, Jennie Cole and Joe Allen led by 10 shots at the halfway mark but dropped seven shots in the last two ends to leave the game tied, the final result being 22-19 after the extra end.

The showpiece Club Championship match saw Dave Evans pick up an early pair of threes to take a commanding 12-2 lead against Karen Tandler. But once into her stride Tandler, a regular at county and national level, proved too strong and took the Arthur Edwards Four-Wood Singles 21-14.

Earlier in the day, two of the previous winners of the title, Tandler and Barbara Griffiths, locked horns in the Ladies Singles. There was no looking back for Griffiths after she took a 16-8 lead and a three on the 17th end eased her towards the finishing line as the 21-12 winner.

Saturday afternoon’s final game saw a comfortable victory in the Tandler Pairs for holders Ashley Edwards and Jennie Cole. A six towards the end of the 21-end game saw off the challenge of Barbara and Richard Griffiths, the match ending 23-10.

Sunday’s bowling – with another four trophies on the table – was rained off and has been rearranged for Monday, August 31.

GOLF

SPONSORS London Pride donated a case of beer to the winner of Cleobury Mortimer GC’s recent Saturday medal - only for talented 14-year-old Jack Severn to swoop and take the honours.

But the the ale didn’t go to waste - Jack’s dad Scott claimed it instead!

Young Severn beat Colin Hopewell, one of the Cleobury club’s most consistent players, on countback after both finished with impressive net 66 scores over the tough and tactical combination of Deer Park and Foxes Run.

Severn, a regular in the county under-18s, pipped Hopewell by virtue of a superior back nine.

Sean Raybould has adapted to Cleobury life well since joining the club in April and he shot a nice gross 72 for a net 68 and third place.

Resident professional Sam Pain said: “Jack is playing a lot of golf outside of Cleobury, and playing to his handicap and below at these other courses. When he comes back to his home course it then makes scoring a lot easier. He is a real talent and has got a great future in the game.”
