BURWAY confirmed their dominance of the South Shropshire bowls scene by lifting the 2015 Flowfit Ludlow and District Bowls League Handicap Knockout Cup.

They needed to beat Cleobury by 70 shots in the final and big wins from Mark Rogers, Wayne Rogers, Roy Crowther and Kevin Dovey gave them serious momentum, with only Cleobury captain Chris Cowdell offering any resistance with a 21-16 victory.

Like both of the semi-finals, it all came down to the last game, with Duncan Pressley having to score 17 to give Burway victory. His opponent, Andy Pain, bowled brilliantly to win 21-18 but that was enough to see Burway take the trophy by just one shot.

In the semis, Burway had required to win by at least 72 shots against Bromfield. It looked a tall order but they came out fighting and single figure wins for Len Lewis, Mark Rogers, Crowther and Russell Davies put them in a strong position. Bromfield's Lewis Rogers and Adam Dovey stemmed the tide and it all came down to the last game with Josh Partridge requiring 17 against Duncan Pressley to see Bromfield progress. Try as he might, he came up against an in-form Pressley, who won 21-13.

The other semi was between Temesters and Cleobury with Cleobury needing to win by 32 shots or more. Two big wins early on from Cowdell and Dave Warrington got them off to a great start but Temesters rallied to win five of the next eight games with Doog Williams on top form to beat Eric Mark 21-11. Temesters captain Carl Davies needed to win the final game 21-13 to steer his side into the final but his opponent, Mike Hutchinson, scored 14 and with the scores level at 183-183 each, Cleobury progressed due to equalling the handicap.

*A VILLAGE bowls club has taken the honours in two of the county’s premier competitions.

The men’s and ladies’ Herefordshire champion of champions are both members of Brimfield and Little Hereford Bowling Club.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for the club and a perfect end to a season which has seen the club go from strength to strength,” said chairman Lester Bennett.

Barbara Griffiths, playing at Weobley against champions from across the county, won a tight quarter-final against St Martin’s Ady Poole 21-19, cruised past Cheryl Morgan from Eardisland 21-8 in the semis and won her first champion of champions title, 21-18 against Ann Walters from Bodenham.

Ashley Edwards, playing at St Martin’s, beat Bob Loveridge (Eastnor) 21-15 in the quarter finals and last year’s winner Alan Rudland from Weobley 21-14 in the semis to set up a mouth-watering encounter with this year’s Under-18 England champion, Ledbury’s Tom Holmes.

The match lived up to expectations with Edwards taking his third champion of champions title 21-20 on the day before his 27th birthday.
